The niches above this staircase were giving the client trouble. They weren't deep enough to hold much and she was unable to find artwork that fit correctly, so trompe l' oeil was her next option.
Stone blocks were added around the niches to give architectural interest while the view was similar to that seen from the other windows in the home. The vase with creeping ivy helps to give a feeling of depth, but it's the shadows placed behind the hanging ivy that give the stone a more realistic feel.
