Debbie Jeanne (D.J.) Killion grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. She graduated from the Academy of Art College in S.F. with a BFA in Illustration. Her focus was on Children's Book Illustration and plans to one day write and illustrate her own children's books.

D.J.'s mural painting career began in 1995. She started painting murals as a means for helping pay her way through college. Upon graduating she decided to start her own mural painting business.

In 1997, D.J. moved to Southern California. Since then, she has quickly become one of Orange County's top decorative painters and continues to build strong relations with her clients. She works with interior designers, homebuilders, and business owners and has a large residential client base.

D.J.'s easygoing personality and willingness to please is what keeps her clients coming back again and again. She prides herself in making sure her clients are happy. She supplies each of her clients with a free estimate and rough sketch at their first meeting and before any painting takes place they are given a detailed drawing along with a final estimate. "If my clients are happy, I am happy." She believes in up front pricing and completing a job when and only when the client is completely satisfied.

Important Criteria in Choosing an Artist

  • Choose an artist with whom you feel comfortable - If you have a large-scale project this artist could be in your home for several days or weeks. You want to be sure they listen to you and your ideas and are willing to work with you. Many artists have a tendency to take over a project as if it were their own.
  • Know exactly what you are getting from the artist up front - The last thing you want is a surprise when the bill comes. Before any painting takes place make sure they provide you with a detailed drawing of the design or faux finish sample along with a final estimate.
  • View samples of their work before you hire them - Every artist should bring along a portfolio to your meeting or at least some samples of their work. Don't trust that "They can do it."
  • Ask for references - It's a good idea to find out what their work characteristics are. A few questions you may want to ask - Were they messy? Did they show up on time? Did they complete the job when they said they would? Were they easy to deal with? Were there any surprise costs?
